Ukraine’s President Signs Law Allowing Central Bank to Issue a CBDC
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi signed a law called On Payment Services, which allows the country's central bank to issue central bank digital currency (CBDC), the president's official website said.
The draft law regulates how payment services, especially digital ones, can be provided in Ukraine.
Specifically, the bill states that the National Bank of Ukraine, the country's central bank, can issue its own digital currency and create a test environment for fintech startups.
On June 30, the draft law was passed in the national parliament of Ukraine, the Verkhovna Rada.
The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) has been examining the possible introduction of a CBDC since 2018. She built an early prototype of the Stellar blockchain and published a report on the subject in 2019.
