Truck slams SUV near U.S.-Mexico border, at least 13 dead

The National Transportation Safety Board announced Tuesday that it would investigate a fatal highway accident that killed at least 13 people when a Ford expedition crowded with 25 adults and children was struck by an articulated truck near the U.S.-Mexico border .
Omar Watson, Chief of the Border Department of the California Highway Patrol:
“The Ford Expedition had 25 passengers, including the driver. Unfortunately, 12 of the occupants, including the driver, died from their injuries on the spot. Another person was taken to the hospital, where she also died from her injuries. // Our border division multidisciplinary investigation team is handling this collision and will ensure that a thorough and complete investigation is completed. It would be premature for me to discuss or speculate what caused this collision. "
Those killed in the accident - including the driver of the SUV - were between 20 and 55 years old.
Despite the presence of U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials, Watson did not elaborate on whether the occupants of the SUV were migrant workers or anyone else who might have traveled from Mexico in an overcrowded vehicle.
The Ford Expedition is usually designed for five to eight people.
The driver of the articulated lorry, who was hauling two loads of gravel, was also hospitalized with moderate injuries.
Watson said the California Highway Patrol was working with the Mexican consulate to determine who was in the vehicle and to inform families of the deceased.
