This One Thing Reveals the Best Weight Loss Method for You, Study Finds

There is no shortage of weight loss plans out there. But how do you know which one is right for you? A new study from the University of Pennsylvania's Perelman School of Medicine suggests that what matters may be the personality traits that make you ... well, you.
For the study, which was published in the journal PLOS ONE on October 14, a team of researchers led by Dr. X. Shirley Chen revisited data from a 2019 study to find the best way to motivate overweight and / or obese adults to become more physically active. The 602 participants, who all pledged to walk more and wear a pedometer to track their progress, were randomized into three groups defined by their style of behavioral intervention:
Competitive: The number of steps taken by the participants was published in a ranking list.
Collaborative: Participants were assigned teams and their step counts were combined.
Supportive: Participants sent step reports to a specific friend or family member.
After 24 weeks with the intervention and 12 weeks without it, the number of steps in the competition group was significantly higher than that of the others. When Dr. Chen reviewed the data, she observed large differences between individuals, and suggested that this could be due to their different personality traits. To test this theory, Dr. Chen and her team data collected at the start of the 2019 study to sort participants into three personality types:
Extroverted and motivated
Less social and less active
Less motivated and at risk
Dr. Chen reevaluated the 2019 data from a "personality" point of view and found that competitive weight loss plans were actually not the best plan for extroverted and motivated participants. Their step counts increased at first and then fell as soon as the leaderboards were gone. In contrast, all of the weight loss plans worked for those who were less social and less active, while none worked for the less active and at risk group.
While this research is too preliminary to draw conclusions about the best wellness plans for, say, extroverts, says Dr. Chen told Eat This, Not That !, that "one size doesn't fit all. Wellness plans could be." more effective when customized for individuals. "
