The Morning After: Samsung might have another Galaxy phone to reveal

Samsung's range of phones is confusing. Even if you can keep the Galaxy S, Galaxy Note, and Galaxy A series separate in your head (the Galaxy S and Note families are definitely in a screen-sized turf war right now), let's add more confusion with the latest leak.

The Galaxy S20 Fan Edition, discovered at the weekend, is neither another cheaper Galaxy A phone nor a Galaxy S20 Lite - I think? The rumored device will continue to feature a multi-camera array, a large screen, and what you would probably expect from a midrange phone. Just expect fewer premium features like lower resolution cameras, although you may still get the smooth 120Hz display than the original S20.
You may not even have to make a selection: this phone may never show up in its current state, or it may even reach the US. Rest assured, the coronavirus pandemic hasn't stopped Samsung from doing countless permutations on its smartphones.

Instagram starts merging chats with Facebook Messenger
Not that you could expect it to work.
Facebook, which owns Instagram and WhatsApp, is slowly creeping in to unify its multi-million dollar apps and services, whether you like it or not. Reports over the weekend suggest that Instagram will offer the ability to notify "friends using Facebook" through Messenger.
Although the signature paper plane icon for DMs has been replaced with the Messenger logo, I am still unable to send messages to Facebook friends, which suggests that the announcement may have come a little earlier. Continue reading.
Play the rare arcade version of 'Quake' on PC
No arcade cabinet required.
Quake Arcade
If Quake means absolutely nothing to you with the latest in ray tracing graphics, you might want to travel back in time to 1998. The arcade edition of the 3D shooter that most of us probably never played is now ready to be played on your PC with a little help from Github.
The Quake Arcade Tournament Edition was a slight innovation from id Software's original game. It had the familiar single and multiplayer elements, and you could even play rounds of Deathmatch if there were multiple cabinets. It also contained random "instaprize" gift boxes that were used to issue tokens for real-world gifts. Continue reading.

There may be a shortage of school laptops
Older laptops could also be problematic.
Acer
A report from Axios points to acute laptop shortages as we head back to school, especially for Chromebooks. Gregg Prendergast, president of Acer America, warned that his company was "not even close" to providing enough Chrome OS laptops to support virtual classrooms. Acer has also just received government inquiries for "hundreds of thousands" of devices in California and Nevada.
Meanwhile, NPD Group analyst Stephen Baker warned that laptop sales were up 20 to 40 percent "every week," and a cursory review of the Best Buy website found that 24 out of 28 low-cost Chromebooks (under $ 400 Dollars) were sold out.

The White House budget proposal focuses on AI and quantum technology
Plus 30 percent.
The White House has proposed a non-defense budget for 2021 that includes an increase in spending on AI and quantum computers by around 30 percent. It would spend about $ 1.5 billion on AI work (up from $ 1.12 billion in 2020) and $ 699 million on quantum technology (up from $ 579 million).
Apparently, about $ 25 million of that expense would go towards the Quantum Internet Plan, a highly secure network that was being built for the future. Continue reading.
