Clorox and Lysol cleaning products were in such demand in the face of the coronavirus pandemic that they sold out in stores where you would normally buy them. When looking for these much sought-after cleaning products online, avoid shopping on scam websites.
A federal court in Ohio, at the request of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), issued an injunction against 25 websites for allegedly selling Clorox and Lysol products and never supplying the cleaning and disinfecting products to customers who bought them online had. The FTC claims that none of the sites is owned, affiliated with, or authorized for sale by Lysol or Clorox products.
In some cases, according to the FTC, consumers were charged thousands of dollars for Lysol and Clorox products that were never delivered. Other consumers reported that when they tried to search for a fake website to get a refund, it disappeared and the defendants set up a new website with a different URL. Some consumers received items they didn't order, like socks, and others reported that the scam website used fake shipping information, making it harder for them to reverse their fees from their credit card company.
"The FTC is working hard to stop scammers trying to scam people with false promises of scarce detergents during the pandemic," said Andrew Smith, director of the Bureau of Consumer Protection, in a press release. "If a seller appears to have items that are out of stock anywhere, do an online search for complaints about the seller or website before making a purchase."
