The Washington Post said Trump is trying to stiffen Giuliani, who has toured the country for the past few months spreading wild conspiracy theories about the November election on behalf of the president.
Citing two unnamed officials, the newspaper said Trump not only refused to pay Giuliani's legal fees, but also told aides that all travel and other expense reimbursement requests must come through him.
The Post said Trump was unhappy with Giuliani's request for $ 20,000 a day fees and had "privately raised concerns" about some of his attorney's moves.
The former mayor denied finding that particular amount last year, calling for a much more unusual fee structure instead.
"I never asked for $ 20,000," he told the New York Times in November. "The arrangement is that we'll sort it out in the end."
The Times on Wednesday confirmed the latest Post report, adding that White House officials blocked Giuliani's calls to Trump.
Giuliani called for "trial by struggle" during a rally in Washington last week when Congress met to confirm the election results he challenged in court on behalf of Trump, who later called on the crowd at the rally on Marching Capitol.
Shortly thereafter, Trump supporters stormed the Capitol in a deadly siege that disrupted the Congressional process for hours and forced lawmakers to go into hiding as the mob ransacked the building.
The president's critics on Twitter took note of his growing feud with his lawyer:
What could be more Trumpian than this: "Trump has instructed aides not to pay Giuliani's legal fees, two officials said." https://t.co/chHDki6Ewp
