R. Kelly's Lawyers Claim Bystanders Didn't Raise a 'Finger' While Singer Was Beaten in Jail

R. Kelly's attorneys claim her client was beaten behind bars and that no one in the correctional facility "raised a finger" to prevent the attack.
According to CNN, Kelly's legal team made the claim in court documents filed on Friday. His attorneys say that a surveillance video at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago shows that an inmate "traveled a great distance ... before doing this act without resistance". Lawyers say Kelly suffered "significant physical and mental injuries" from the August attack.
"It remains an unresolved question whether MCC staff promoted and then approved a whipping against Mr. Kelly," wrote Michael Leonard, R. Kelly attorney. "That alone deserves an evidence hearing."
CNN reports that an inmate named Jeremiah Farmer - a convicted member of the Latin Kings street gang - identified himself as Kelly's attacker in a lawsuit last month. Farmer claimed he hit Kelly to draw media attention to his own case of blackmail.
An MCC security guard identified as "D. Szyhowski" reportedly met with Farmer shortly before the attack. The clerk claims that Farmer ignored his orders to stay in his office and managed to get into Kelly's cell and hit him in the head and torso. Szyhowski says he then used pepper spray and asked farmers to stop the attack. The farmer reportedly followed the order and left the cell.
According to the Chicago Tribune, Kelly's defense team is trying to question farmers under oath to bail their client. Kelly has been behind bars since the summer of 2019. He is charged with child pornography, sexual assault and obstruction of justice in Illinois and New York.
