Original Aunt Viv ‘Glad’ She Joined ‘Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’ Reunion: ‘Holding on to Anger Is a Waste of Energy’
Janet Hubert, the actress who created and played the role of Aunt Vivian on "The Fresh of Bel-Air" for three seasons, is "glad" that she is joining star Will Smith for the HBO Max reunion of the show composed.
“I am so grateful for all the love and understanding. Will and his team let me take part in whatever I wanted, and I felt good about it, ”tweeted Hubert on Thursday, the day the 30th anniversary special premiered. “After 27 years of separation, we are all different people. It was great to see everyone, life is too short! "
Hubert left the show before season 4 and was replaced by Daphne Maxwell Reid. Smith has spoken loudly about how he and Hubert clashed while working together, while Hubert took a decidedly negative view of their former co-stars. In 2016, she criticized Smith and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith for boycotting the Oscars to protest the lack of diversity in the awards ceremony. The following year, Hubert called out Alfonso Ribeiro, who played Carlton Banks on "Fresh Prince," after posting a photo with the rest of the main cast.

At the reunion special on Thursday, Smith and Hubert sat down to clear the air over their departure, which had long been speculated about.
"Something I want to make clear is that this third season when I got pregnant there was a lot of things going on in my life and in Will's life too," explained Hubert. “There was some friction because I was pregnant. Home life was not good at all. I stopped laughing, smiling, joking because there were things that nobody knew about. The cast had no idea what was going on. "
Smith added, "During this period of her pregnancy I wasn't sensitive. I wasn't astute. And now that I had three kids, I've learned some things that I didn't know then, and I would do things very differently I can see where I made the set very difficult for Janet. "
Hubert stated that after the third season she turned down a "bad deal" and was never fired, although this misunderstanding was "always published" in the press.

"I've lost everything. Reputation. Everything," said Hubert. "You know that these words - calling a black woman in Hollywood" difficult "- are the kiss of death. The kiss of death. It's hard enough being a dark-skinned black woman in this business. But I felt it was necessary that we move forward. "
Smith, meanwhile, blamed his youth - he was 21 at the time - and was "frightened" in the way he treated Hubert. He apologized and said to his former co-star, "I couldn't have a 30th anniversary without celebrating you."
The reunion with “Fresh Prince” ended with Hubert reuniting with the cast and the first meeting with their successor Reid.
"Holding on to anger is a waste of energy," wrote Hubert in a follow-up tweet on Thursday. “I love Will, proud of him, he was young, it was so wonderful to see him and the cast all grown up. I felt like a mother to all of them. Health!"
