Maren Morris' Trainer Has Just the Tricks to Bust You Out of Your Workout Rut—and They're Relatable AF
Among other things, 2020 may have been the year your fitness routine got out of hand.
Maybe you're a GTL guy who feels like you can't really get swollen outside of a gym. Or, you are someone who relies on the motivation that only a trainer's watchful eye and a room full of classmates can provide. Whatever the situation, there really is no need to sweat about it.
Because getting on the track can really be a walk in the park. Really. That's the advice fitness pro Erin Oprea - the Nashville trainer who put Carrie Underwood, Maren Morris, Kacey Musgraves, and Kelsea Ballerini through its paces - when asked about the best way to start a health journey.
"The very first thing I want people to do when they haven't exercised is just go for it," she told E! Messages: "Because once you start running, it gives you energy and the more energy you have, the more you want to move rather than force yourself to do something."

And once you've taken those first few steps in your journey, the rest becomes possible. "My goal for people is not to look at the big picture and not say, 'I will exercise every day, I will eat clean every day, and I will do XYZ every day.' because you're preparing for failure, "remarked Erin. "Realistically, life gets in the way and it probably just won't happen. And then one day you will miss and say, 'Forget it, I'm giving up.' And that's what happens all the time. "
Instead, she recommends setting the smallest of intentions, be it a half-hour walk a day or a workout three days a week, even if they have to be split up between lunch, nap times, and early morning hours: "It doesn't make it easier getting overwhelmed by it, and easier not to give up because you've had a setback. "

Her personal favorite is a tabata session, where each four-minute exercise is broken down into 20 seconds of intense work - such as jumping squats or climbers - followed by a 10-second rest. Incredibly effective, they "make a huge difference to my clients," she said. "And who doesn't love to turn fitness into a game? That's roughly my motto: let's have fun with training, training doesn't have to be boring."

That could mean running - or boxing or swimming or skipping rope or an energetic dance class that left you with just the right amount of shortness of breath. "Find something that gets your heart rate up but also gives you pleasure," she recommended, but understand that enjoyment can be limited. "I'm not saying you won't feel like you're dying. It's okay to feel you are dying. But at least the first five minutes it was fun!"
Because of this, she mixes a fair amount of Tabata into her sessions with Kelsea, Kacey, and Maren so that they can have at least some fun before falling into a puddle of sweat.
"They see it as a game and time goes by so fast," she noted. "They always say they are the fastest."
She lets her clients exercise at least 10,000 steps a day, three times a week, but tries to make sure not one of them feels monotonous. "Every day is a different workout when I work out," she noted. "So it keeps you from getting bored and that's my business. There will be a consistency of movements, but always strung together differently."
And while she sometimes has to push Maren through the more heartbreaking parts, for example ("She hates cardio, but we're working on it"), her overall approach is more advocate than disciplinary.
Similar to all of her customers: "I want her to try to enjoy the trip and not worry about it," she explains to the new mother, 9-month-old son Hayes, who excels in push-ups and leg days. "Because on the one hand stress adds weight and it doesn't help the situation at all. It stays constant and it pays off."
That's why Erin's nutritional advice is far more meaningful than you might expect from someone whose abs you can count. Although she recommends saving starches for earlier in the day so your body can burn them off instead of storing them, the rest is a pretty gentle push to try to eat clean most of the time.
"My goal with my clients is to tell them, 'Look, enjoy,'" she explained. "Life is about leading a healthy, balanced lifestyle, and that is overly indulgent at times. You know what? The world didn't end after you ate a big fat cheeseburger and some french fries and a milkshake. You have to don't clean. You don't have to starve yourself. It's okay to get back on track right away. "
The problem becomes when your meals eating my feelings start to outperform your moments eating my vegetables. The professional emphasizes that the general goal should be a healthy, balanced lifestyle.
To them, it looks like eating until you feel satisfied, not overcrowded ("if you're full, you've eaten too much"), staying hydrated so you don't mistake thirst for hunger, limit nightly carbohydrates, and with the Karma Wellness Partner, maybe drink a bottle of the brand's nutrient-rich elderberry star fruit water. "You have to realize that it's a lifestyle," she said of her stance on healthy eating. "If you think of it as a diet, you say, 'I can't have this, I can't do this,' and that's all you think about." That's just right when visions of buns and chocolate chip cookies start dancing in your head.
"It just drives you crazy," she remarked. So their motto is, "Learn to be healthy and balanced, and the weight will decrease. If you are consistent and not perfect, the results will come."
Of course, these results aren't limited to the coveted size two or four shape.
She has seen too many women stare at each other in a mirror and complain about the size of their arms, stomach, or thighs to advocate more than confidence and satisfaction.
"We're always looking for things to take apart, and I want people to know that you will never find perfection. And if perfection is what you are looking for, you will live your life miserably," she said. "There is no such thing as perfection on a scale, there is no perfect body because everyone you look at and think, 'Wow, they are perfect, if only I could have what they have.' I guarantee this person will take himself apart. Very sad actually, we are terrible for ourselves in relation to our bodies. "
So her goal for clients - both those she trains personally and those who download her app - is: "When they put on an outfit, I want them to say, 'Damn, I look good today'", she said. "That's an achievement right there."
