Issa Rae's breakthrough on HBO's Insecure comes to an end with season five.
Amy Gravitt, executive vice president of HBO Programming, announced the end of the show on Wednesday. At the same time as the announcement, it was also announced that the season has already been written and will go into production this month. Rae, Yvonne Orji, Jay Ellis, Natasha Rothwell, Amanda Seales and Alexander Hodge will all return as part of the lead cast. The show was renewed for its fifth season last year when the fourth season ended.
"Prentice [Penny] and I are so grateful that HBO believed our show from the start and believed in us to keep our vision going to the end," Issa Rae told Deadline. "We always planned to tell this story in five seasons, but we wouldn't have made it this far without the tremendous support from our audience. I feel immensely blessed to at least finish our characters' stories on screen."
The show is based in part on Rae's online show Awkward Black Girl, which ran on YouTube for two seasons. She later worked with co-creator Larry Wilmore to work on the pilot that eventually became the foundation for Insecure. It premiered on HBO in 2016 and received critical acclaim.
"Issa made insecurity an icon of comedy," said HBO's Amy Gravitt. "The show is as succinct as it is from the heart, and because of the deeply personal work that Issa, Prentice and Melina have done, it has won over audiences." The cast and the authors agreed to it. This talented team made a brilliant final season for Insecure and we look forward to sharing many more stories with this unique group of people. "
The fifth and final season of Insecure is expected to premiere on HBO later this year.
