iPhone 12 Pro Max teardown reveals a truly huge main camera
It's no secret that Apple's iPhone 12 Pro Max has a larger main camera, but now it's clear just how big that sensor really is. iFixit released an outline of the iPhone 12 Pro Max detailing the camera size. While the camera itself is visibly larger, it's the sensor-shift stabilization that makes it overdone - the full unit makes the main shooter of the regular 12 Pro look petite in comparison. According to iFixit, Apple may have had to "compromise" to put this camera in the smaller phone.
Many other parts are bigger too. It's not surprising that the 14.13 Wh battery is the largest for any current iPhone (albeit smaller than the 11 Pro Max's 15.04 Wh). However, the speaker and Taptic Engine are also huge, at least when compared to the compact parts in the 12 mini. Apple knew there was room to breathe with the 12 Pro Max and in other words used it.
The Pro Max is about as easy to repair as other iPhone 12 models, with the glass back and water resistance being the only major wrinkles.
Dismantling iFixit is compounding the dilemma for many iPhone buyers. After a brief pause, it's clear again that to get the best camera technology in the range, you need to buy the largest iPhone. This doesn't rule out future upgrades to smaller models, but the physical limitations are hard to ignore for the 2020 models.
