Husband who shot wife to death in Leesport has also died
Oct. 18 - The man who shot and killed his wife in Leesport over the weekend also died, officials said this morning.
The shooting took place at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday on the first block of N. Center Ave., where the couple lived.
Heidi Lopez, 33, died on the scene after her husband Ernesto Lopez Milpa, 40, shot in the head, Berks County prosecutors said.
Her death has been classified as murder by the Berks County Coroner's office.
Milpa also shot himself in the head and was rushed to Reading Hospital, where he was pronounced dead Sunday night, coroner said.
According to the coroner, his death was considered a suicide.
Autopsies are not ordered.
District Attorney John T. Adams said this morning that while his office continues to investigate some details in the murder-suicide, Milpa's death essentially ends the case.
At the time of the shooting, there were family members in the house who were cooperative with investigators, Adams said.
The family's children are in the care of other family members, he said.
"It's a very dire situation for this family," said Adams over the weekend. "This is a very tragic domestic violence incident. It is an incident that should never have happened. Now this family is without a mother and most likely without a father."
