Foxconn, the company that assembled your iPhone, unveils electric car chassis
Foxconn, the Taiwanese electronics contract maker best known for assembling Apple products, has launched an automotive EV platform to become an electric car component maker. At the unveiling in Taipei, Liu Young-way, chairman of Foxconn, said he was aiming for a 10 percent share of the global EV market by 2025.
The chassis is described as "open source" with customizable items such as size, wheelbase, suspension type and battery size. Partner automakers could customize it to their needs, and Foxconn would put it together for them.
The company also plans to introduce a solid-state battery for electric vehicles in 2024, which is said to be superior to today's lithium-ion batteries for electric cars.
In January, FCA named Foxconn as a joint venture partner for the construction of electric vehicles in China. Foxconn is currently a supplier to Tesla. The chairman said his company was talking to several automakers about further mergers.
In the US, Foxconn was in the news about its planned Wisconsin factory. In a deal announced by former Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, the state promised to grant the Taiwanese manufacturer $ 3 billion in subsidies for a new LCD display assembly line, and President Trump attended the groundbreaking ceremony in 2018 part. Recently, however, Wisconsin said it would not deliver the first installment of the money because Foxconn did not hire the agreed number of workers or invest the required amount in the project.
