The Mustang GT Performance Package Level 2 introduced by Ford in 2018 was intended to close the gap between the normal GT and the highly tense Shelby GT350. With more powerful Brembo brakes, stickier tires, better cooling, and high-performance suspension, the Mustang is if you regularly visit the track but don't want to pay Shelby money. To make room in the Mustang range for the Mach 1, Ford has discontinued the Level 2 performance package for the 2021 model year, a spokesman confirmed to Road & Track via email.
The Mustang GT Performance Pack Level 2 connects the Bullitt and Shelby GT350 with fairings that will be removed from the Mustang range for 2021. That means the Mach 1 has big shoes to fill. It doesn't have an exotic flat engine like the Shelby, but uses the Bullitt's 5.0-liter V-8 with 480 hp. What it does have, however, are a number of Shelby parts that should make it perfect for use on the racetrack, including a transmission oil cooler, a rear axle cooler, and a Tremec six-speed manual transmission. There's even a defeatable rev adjustment to achieve the perfect downshift. If you choose the handling package, you get a bigger wing with more downforce and sticky Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires.
In terms of price, the Mustang GT Performance Pack Level 2 was only available for $ 45,575 - over $ 7,000 less than the base Mach 1. As Motor1 points out, the Performance Pack was only an option for the normal production Mustang Der Mach 1 is a limited special edition.
Do you think the Mach 1 has what it takes to be the heart of the Mustang? It's the only track-oriented Mustang you can buy right now, aside from the big Papa Shelby GT500. Let us know in the comments below.
