The GTO was originally born out of a kind of corporate subterfuge. At the time, company policy was that midsize cars were limited to engines no larger than 330 cubic inches.
However, this rule did not apply to option packages. Hence, the GTO package became an option over the Le Mans package, which was itself an option package over the Pontiac Tempest. If it sounds confusing, don't feel bad. Something was intended.

The car became a wild success, ushering in the muscle car era as we know it. As you probably know, the Pontiac GTO is a very hot feature in the muscle car world. However, since it is built on the Le Mans platform, it is entirely possible to build your own car from a cheaper base car.
This is exactly what the owner of this car did. Starting with a Le Mans from 1964, they built a convincing replica. All the important parts are there: the 389 cubic inch V8, the four-speed manual gearbox, the scooped bonnet.

The other details are there too: the badge, the red striped tires, the "Dual Dual" exhaust. What's the main difference between this and a real GTO? The price.

This 1964 GTO homage is sold by Corvette Mike Midwest of Burr Ridge, Illinois. For just $ 59,990, you can own this well-executed tribute to the iconic muscle car that started it all. Sure, you can buy a real GTO for that money - but it won't be nearly as nice. You have to dig deeper into your pockets for that.
