College Football Team Brings Chainsaw Onto Field And Referee Objects
This is a way to generate buzz before kick-off.
Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College brought out a live chainsaw ahead of their big game against Jones College Thursday. (See the video below.)
Defensive Action Brian Merritt led the team's entrance onto the field by twisting the noisy tool until a referee pulled the plug.
"Don't bring it with you," said one official in a video posted on Twitter.
Merritt tweeted a report on the chainsaw, writing, "Exercise is all my love."
There was no chainsaw massacre like in the horror movie, but there was a massacre on the scoreboard. MGCCC won 35-8.
The chainsaw has been a team tradition for two years. "It brings a lot of energy and I think it's unique," coach Jack Wright told the Biloxi Sun Herald. "Anything that gives the children a little boost before the game, I'm all for it."
The referees didn't seem like big fans.
"One of us has been doing this for 30 years and has never seen anything like it," an official told Sun Herald's Alyssa Newton, who also posted a video.
Maybe the chainsaw stunt will work. According to the school's website, the Gulf Coast has won 21 games in a row.
