Boat of missing Carolina Beach man washes ashore near Portugal

The boat of a Carolina Beach man who was reported missing in November 2021 has been found.
According to a press release from the City of Carolina Beach, the ship Joseph Johnson was seen washed ashore on an island near Portugal last week.
Authorities on the island of São Jorge — a small island in the Azores archipelago in the mid-Atlantic — contacted Carolina Beach police last week when they discovered a Clearwater fishing boat that washed ashore in 2006 was registered to Johnson, the report said press release.
The island is nearly 3,000 miles from Carolina Beach.
Johnson, 44, was not found. He has been missing for seven months, believed to be at sea.

Joseph Johnson, 44, of Carolina Beach, was last seen on his boat exiting Federal Point Yacht Club on November 22.
Johnson was last seen exiting the Federal Point Yacht Club in Carolina Beach around 11 a.m. on November 22, 2021. Shortly thereafter, on November 27, 2021, he was reported missing after failing to return to a previously arranged fishing trip with a friend.
In November, the US Coast Guard conducted a five-ship search for Johnson, covering nearly 7,500 square miles in 53 hours. The search was stopped because no new information was found.
Carolina Beach Police previously reported that Johnson was last seen on a 19-foot SeaCraft Center Console fishing boat, but further investigation determined it was the 2006 Clearwater boat now located.
According to the press release, Portuguese authorities are assisting the Carolina Beach Police Department in gathering evidence and continuing their search for Johnson.
The Carolina Beach Police Department described Johnson as a 6-foot-2, 220-pound white male with strawberry blonde hair. Anyone with information regarding Johnson's whereabouts is asked to contact the department at 911 or directly at 910-458-2540.
