Autopsy: Transgender rights activist died from embolism
HOUSTON (AP) - Monica Roberts, a prominent Houston transgender activist and blogger, died of complications from a pulmonary embolism, the Harris County medical examiner reported Thursday.
Robert's body was found in the parking lot of an apartment complex early in the morning of October 6, where she apparently had removed her trash, police said. The autopsy report cited obesity and high blood pressure as factors in Roberts' death.
Pulmonary embolism is a blockage of a pulmonary artery, usually caused by a blood clot.
Roberts, a native of Houston, started her award-winning TransGriot blog in 2006 as a forum for colored transgender people.
It was one of the first blogs to identify victims of transgender murder based on their correct gender identity and name.
She was also politically active through her CFAIR blog and political action committee, through which she supported political candidates who were sensitive to the rights and needs of the LGBT community. Roberts was also a founding member of the National Transgender Advocacy Coalition.
