Amelia Hamlin Responds to Accusations of “Blackfishing” in Instagram Photos
Amelia Hamlin responded to "black fishing" allegations after a series of photos she shared on social media sparked controversy.
On February 25, the model shared a series of photos of herself on Instagram. In the pictures, she wears her hair in a long, thin braid and her skin tone appears a few shades darker than in her other recent photos. She titled the post "Whiplash made me like ...".
Although the 19-year-old's comments are now disabled for this post, she announced on her Instagram story that she received negative comments on the photos that accused her of "black fishing". The term "blackfish" refers to when non-black individuals use hair or makeup to create the appearance of certain traits that make them look black or racially ambiguous. In this case, it was Amelia's dark complexion that questioned her intentions.
The star, who is dating Scott Disick, wrote of her story: "I get a lot of comments on my latest photo. I am told I am 'black fishing' - thank you all for bringing up this issue to me. I recently took a vacation in the sun and with my Italian heritage I tan very easily. "

She continued, "There's no self-tanner involved. Or the intent to look darker than my own natural skin tone. I had a lot of fun creating this look with no malicious intent or insult."

Black fishing is part of a larger conversation about how black culture is often appropriated by non-black individuals. Other stars accused of using black culture as a fashion statement include Rita Ora and rapper Bhad Bhabie.

This is not the only time this month that Amelia's posts have been controversial. Amelia's mother Lisa Rinna clapped back on Hasser in the Instagram comments of Amelia's latest lingerie shoot. After a commenter described the pictures as "gross," the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star wrote back, "What's wrong with you? This is my kid."
