The 2021 Mercedes-Maybach S580, the high-end member of the S-Class, celebrated its debut today.
It is powered by the turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 from Mercedes with 496 hp and supplemented by a 48-volt hybrid system.
The Mercedes-Maybach S580 is expected to be available in the summer of 2021 in the price range of $ 200,000.
Maybach is a state of mind. It is the belief that a regular Mercedes-Benz S-Class does not sufficiently tell the world that you are successful, with the belief that your time is so precious that you cannot afford the distraction of driving yourself. It follows from root level belief that what you do to run the universe is more important than what others do to keep it well oiled. You are important. And now Mercedes has shown its latest Maybach sedan, which immediately banishes all previous Maybachs to their previous status.
This is formally the 2021 Mercedes-Maybach S580 4Matic Sedan. And formal is the only way it will come.
The new Maybach made its personal debut at an unveiling event in Southern California that prohibited driving. It was there behind a house with a view of Malibu, as if it were floating on a cloud of money and joining the LAX landing pattern. It's not a startling thing, but it looks like money.

As a reminder: Maybach is no longer an independent brand with its own products. That 15 year old experiment died in December 2012 when the last pure Maybach was made. Now it is Mercedes-Maybach, which exists as an ultra-luxury parallel to the performance-oriented Mercedes-AMG brand. Mercedes-Benz has now become the mainstream brand, ranging from the almost populist A-Class to cars like the sybaritic SL roadster and all these FedEx vans.
The basic formula for creating a Maybach S-Class is no different from the B-pillar, which it shares with the "bare" S-Class sedan, while what is behind the B-pillar has been stretched. The wheelbase has been increased by 9.1 inches from 124.6 inches to 133.7 inches compared to the standard S-Class, while the overall length has increased from 206.9 to 215.3 inches (plus 8.4 inches). That means the rear areas, rear doors and the roof are all Maybach-specific. The rear trunk lid is reportedly shared with the regular S-Class.
In the previous Maybach, the expansion in the base plate was achieved by adding an additional punch plug to the regular floor of the S-Class. So far, nobody at Mercedes Auto and Driver has answered how it is done this time. Regardless of the method used, the Maybach models are built on the same assembly line in Sindelfingen.
The basic chassis design and mechanical substance of the Maybach are the same as other members of the S-Class vehicles of the W223 generation. This is the generation that went into production and sales this year.
The "basis" Mercedes-Maybach is the S580 with 4Matic all-wheel drive. The engine is the 4.0-liter V-8 with two turbochargers from Mercedes, which delivers 496 hp and is supplemented by a 48-volt hybrid system that offers up to 21 hp more power. Mercedes claims the additional battery assist smoothes torque transfer to provide linear acceleration for the luxury liner. And it's likely that the shifts in the nine-speed automatic transmission will only be recognized by the most sensitive plutocratic rear ends.
A version with the Mercedes twin turbo V-12 is inevitable. And it's likely the first time the V-12 has been lashed to the all-wheel drive system.

As for the interior, this thing has it all. Plus everything else and more. The front seats - for the chauffeur and the replacement chauffeur - are a pretty familiar S-Class. It's beautiful, high-tech, but somehow still uncomplicated. What counts in this vehicle is the rear passenger compartment.

Under a leather-lined blanket, the two potentates sit in their backs on thrones, who sit back and relax for the massage from the bolt. There is an optional champagne cooler with champagne flutes made of sterling silver between the two seats. There are tabletops to edit, large screens to enjoy all kinds of media, controls to manipulate everything, and loads of details to make you feel like you got your money's worth.
The Maybach has a certain boast that must be recognized as a strategic decision. From the available two-tone paint to the chrome spear on the bonnet to the massive radiator grille, it's not just about proclaiming prosperity, but also about social dominance. This is not a car that was built to blend in.
It will go on sale next year, with the price expected to be near or above $ 200,000. And to carry your luggage, you need one of the new Mercedes-Maybach GLS SUVs to support your entourage.
