17-year-old is adopted after 3,739 days in foster care and 24 different homes

A 17-year-old has found a forever home after a decade in the care system.
Akyra Holstein was adopted by Katie Holstein on September 25th in Kentucky. Akyra had completed 24 different internships in 3,739 days.
"The thing I love most about her is how resilient she is," Katie Holstein told Good Morning America. "Despite being in care for so long only to be disappointed, she took a chance on me and my family and let herself be loved again."
Holstein started childcare in August 2017. She has helped other foster parents with aftercare where she would take in foster children on short notice.

Akyra came into Holstein's care in March 2019 through follow-up care.

"Then she came back for the last time in March 2020 and stayed," said Holstein. "She had been here for a couple of months at this point and I couldn't imagine she wasn't here."
Holstein was caring for several children when she began the adoption process for Akyra - including a baby named Thomas, whom she also fell in love with.
"He was 6 days old and was spending a little time in the intensive care unit," said Holtein, adding that she called Thomas "Tiny". "When he came to me, he was pretty small and it was kind of stuck."

At Akyra's request, Holstein adopted both Akyra and 1-year-old Thomas through Zoom on the same day. Family, friends, and Akyra's caseworkers were all present at the event, which was captured on zoom video.

"She would go through fire for this child," said Holtein of Akyra's case worker. "I firmly believe that Akyra is as strong as she is because she had her in her corner."

Holtein said Akyra will graduate from high school in May. Although mom wants her to stay home and attend community college, Akyra wants to go away and prepare for a career in law enforcement.
